Remarks: MSW3 recognizes 3 subspecies (coucang, menagensis, javanicus), but newer sources (ITIS, MDD) consider it monotypic. The species has previously included sumatrensis, brachycephalus, buku, hilleri, insularis, malaiana, malayanus, and natunae as subspecies as well. MCZ considers it monotypic, and uses this name as a blanket for a number of Nycticebus species (javanicus, borneanus, etc.). Family name was originally Loridae, as used in MCZbase, but the more commonly used spelling of Lorisidae was conserved by IUCN Opinion 1995.
